Since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1992, Deirdre have pursued a parallel career in creating work for exhibition and commission and in working as a tutor to various groups . Her craft practice has evolved through experimenting with materials and methods of making in which hand work and craftsmanship provide both direction and context. Hand skills are used though the work in a humorous commentary on social and textile history within the contemporary gallery. Her textile work employs a variety of techniques and materials fusing traditional textile skills and contemporary reinterpretation through photography and digital manipulation.

With a passion for making and working with people she has worked recently on a variety of residencies in Britain and Australia making work for exhibition and with communities.

Spincycle presents posts relating to research by artist Deirdre Nelson on the theme 'spin' for Atlas Arts on Skye.

Funded by Creative Scotland, Spincycle is a year long audience development project for the arts in Skye and Lochalsh. Taking as its starting point the theme of spin; it will explore things that revolve and turn, rotate ,mirror, repeat and turn. 'Spin' draws inspiration from many areas
including a previous project by curator Kevin Murray previously at Craft Victoria in Melbourne.



ATLAS was established in 2010 to generate innovative and ambitious visual arts projects in Skye and Lochalsh. ATLAS is an organisation without walls, not fixed by, or to, a permanent gallery space. ATLAS aspires to generate vibrant contemporary art practice in the context of Skye and Lochalsh through high quality projects, incorporating educational work and involvement from the community in a variety of forms, and placing this work within a local, national and international context.
